Bio

Born in Boston and raised in Minnesota, I live for geekiness. Throughout grade school I was the quiet kid in the corner with a different book every week: Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, The Hobbit ...if it was fantasy or science fiction, I wanted it. And if it was a horror movie, I wanted that, too. One of my favorite past-times is watching horror movies with my mom and my brother, Liam. Well, trying to watch them. Mom cowers behind her hand, I cower behind my knitting, Liam covers his ears for some weird reason, and we miss half the movie.

My love of writing came as no surprise to my family. It's always been my thing. (According to Dad, I was single-handedly leveling forests when I was five with the amount of paper I used. Sorry, nature.) And since both of my parents are published authors in speculative fiction, it just made sense. It's been a passion since I was eleven.

And then, throughout high school and college, I began to notice a pattern in all the books I was reading and all the shows and movies I loved watching. They always centered around the same person: the white, young, straight male who's usually a smart-ass. Not that I don't like him. He's Percy Jackson and Tony Stark and so many other favorites. But he's hogging the spotlight. Everyone else is pushed aside: the women, the people of color, the LGBTQ+ community. They show up every now and again, but usually on the sidelines. And when they are in the story, they're a two-dimensional stereotype.

Needless to say, I got very sick of it very quickly. And since the general advice for authors is to write what you want to read, that's exactly what I've been doing. I started the blog Dragons, Zombies and Aliens before my sophomore year of college and started poking magazines and other, established websites with submissions. Then, after getting several short stories and novellas published, I entered the jungle that is self-publishing.

I've now managed to successfully stumble through Hamline University with a bachelor's in history and social justice. There are movies to watch, books to read, and stories to write. It's time to make a few changes.
